Measuring approximately 4 inches long, this smaller marlinspike offers the functionality of a traditional marine rope splicing tool in a convenient, compact size.
Individually hand-machined by Butterfield Machine, each spike features a smooth, tapered profile designed for separating rope strands, loosening knots, and assisting with traditional rigging work.
A Classic Tool for Marine Ropework
Marlin spikes have been used by sailors and riggers for generations. Sometimes called marlinspikes or rope splicing spikes, these traditional tools are useful for a variety of ropework applications.
Common uses include:
- Rope Splicing: Separating strands of twisted rope when preparing or completing a splice.
- Knot Loosening: Working through tight knots without cutting the rope.
- Marlinspike Hitches: Assisting with drawing marline and cordage tight.
- Marine Rigging: General rope handling, knotwork, and traditional nautical applications.
The compact design makes this an excellent addition to a sailor's tool kit or ropework collection.
Available in Four Materials
Choose from four distinctive materials, each offering its own appearance and characteristics.
Natural Amber Ultem - Machined from amber-colored Ultem (PEI), a high-performance engineering thermoplastic known for its strength, dimensional stability, and resistance to heat and chemicals. Its translucent amber appearance gives it a distinctive look.
Black Ultem - Offering the same general engineering-material advantages as natural Ultem, the black version provides a more understated appearance.
Brass - A classic nautical material with a substantial feel and warm golden finish. Brass naturally develops a rich patina with age and handling.
Titanium - Strong, lightweight, and highly corrosion resistant, titanium offers an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and a modern alternative to traditional metal marlin spikes.
Precision-Machined Construction
Each compact marlin spike is individually machined from 3/8-inch-diameter stock. The tapered design provides a smooth working surface for ropework, while the compact dimensions make it convenient to carry and store.
Whether you prefer the lightweight feel of Ultem or titanium or the traditional weight and appearance of brass, each version reflects Butterfield Machine's commitment to quality craftsmanship.
