The FlatTop - Copper EDC Spinning Top

The FlatTop EDC Spinning Top in Copper - Butterfield Machine

Solid tellurium copper. Precision machining. A spinning top designed to go wherever you do.

Meet the Copper FlatTop, a distinctive stemless EDC spinning top individually machined from solid tellurium copper by Butterfield Machine.

Unlike traditional spinning tops with tall stems, the FlatTop features a compact, low-profile design that feels substantial in your hand and fits comfortably in your pocket.  At 1.5 inches in diameter and approximately 78 grams, this precision-machined copper spinner combines the satisfying weight of solid metal with the fascinating physics of a spinning top.

Whether you're an EDC enthusiast, spinning top collector, or simply appreciate beautifully machined metal objects, the Copper FlatTop is designed to be carried, handled, and enjoyed.

A Different Kind of Spinning Top

The FlatTop was created with a simple philosophy: make a quality spinning top that feels great in your hand, looks fantastic, and is comfortable enough to carry every day.

Instead of a traditional stem, the FlatTop is spun using its outer diameter, giving it a distinctive spinning technique and compact profile.  While the design isn't intended to compete for record-breaking spin times, its substantial copper construction and precision ceramic bearing tip deliver impressive performance.

Even those with little spinning top experience can achieve spin times of 5 minutes or more with proper technique and a suitable surface.  The result is a pocket-sized mechanical object that's just as enjoyable to handle as it is to spin.

Solid Tellurium Copper Construction

Each Copper FlatTop is individually machined from solid tellurium copper round bar, a copper alloy valued for its machinability and distinctive appearance.

Copper is one of the earliest metals used by humans, with a history stretching back thousands of years. Its warm reddish color, substantial feel, and natural aging characteristics make it a particularly attractive material for precision-machined EDC accessories.

Over time, exposure to air, handling, and everyday use causes the copper to develop a natural patina.  The more you carry and handle your FlatTop, the more its appearance evolves, creating a finish that's uniquely yours.  Prefer the original bright copper appearance? The surface can be polished back to a shine using a suitable copper polish.

Precision Silicon Nitride Ceramic Bearing Tip

The Copper FlatTop spins on a 1/16-inch silicon nitride (Si₃N₄) ceramic ball bearing tip.

Silicon nitride is an extremely hard, wear-resistant ceramic material that provides a smooth contact point for spinning.

Combined with the FlatTop's substantial weight and carefully machined profile, this bearing tip allows the top to spin smoothly on suitable surfaces.

Typical spin performance:

  • Spin times of 5 minutes or more are achievable with proper technique.
  • Actual performance depends on the spinning surface, technique, and conditions.
  • The stemless design generally produces lower initial RPMs than traditional stemmed spinning tops.

We've even achieved spin times exceeding 12 minutes with a limited-edition Copper Buffalo Nickel FlatTop.  But ultimately, the FlatTop isn't about chasing records. It's about enjoying a beautifully machined object that's satisfying to carry, handle, and spin.

Compact, Pocket-Friendly EDC Design

The FlatTop's low-profile, stemless design makes it easy to carry in your pocket or keep on your desk.

At approximately 78 grams, the Copper FlatTop offers a satisfying weight without the bulk of a traditional stemmed spinning top.  Its simple design and solid copper construction make it an attractive addition to any EDC collection.
