The FlatTop - Polished Brass EDC Spinning Top

The FlatTop in Brass - Butterfield Machine

Solid brass. Precision machining. A spinning top designed to go wherever you do.

Meet the Brass FlatTop, a unique stemless EDC spinning top individually machined from solid brass by Butterfield Machine.

Unlike traditional spinning tops with tall stems, the FlatTop features a compact, low-profile design that feels substantial in your hand and fits comfortably in your pocket. At 1.5 inches in diameter and approximately 69 grams, this precision-machined brass spinner combines the satisfying weight of solid metal with the fascinating physics of a spinning top.

Whether you're an EDC enthusiast, spinning top collector, or simply appreciate beautifully machined metal objects, the FlatTop is designed to be carried, handled, and enjoyed.

A Different Kind of Spinning Top

The FlatTop was designed with a simple philosophy: create a quality spinning top that feels great in your hand, looks fantastic, and is comfortable enough to carry every day. Instead of a traditional stem, the FlatTop is spun using its outer diameter, giving it a distinctive spinning technique and compact profile.

While the design isn't intended to compete for record-breaking spin times, its substantial brass construction and precision ceramic bearing tip deliver impressive performance. Even those with little spinning top experience can achieve spin times of 5 minutes or more with proper technique and a suitable surface.

The result is a pocket-sized mechanical object that's just as enjoyable to handle as it is to spin.

Solid Brass Construction & Natural Patina

Each Brass FlatTop is individually machined from solid brass, giving it a beautiful golden appearance and substantial weight. Brass is valued for its classic appearance, durability, and distinctive feel. Over time, exposure to air, handling, and everyday use causes the brass to develop a natural patina. This evolving finish gives each FlatTop its own unique character.

Prefer the original bright brass appearance? The surface can be polished back to a brilliant shine using a suitable metal polish. The more you carry and handle your FlatTop, the more its finish becomes uniquely yours.

Precision Silicon Nitride Ceramic Bearing Tip

The Brass FlatTop spins on a 1/16-inch silicon nitride (Si₃N₄) ceramic ball bearing tip.

Silicon nitride is an extremely hard, wear-resistant ceramic material that provides a smooth contact point for spinning. Combined with the FlatTop's substantial weight and carefully machined profile, this bearing tip allows the top to spin smoothly on suitable surfaces.

Typical spin performance:

  • 5+ minute spins are achievable, even for beginners.
  • Spin times depend on technique, surface, and conditions.
  • The stemless design generally produces lower initial RPMs than conventional stemmed spinning tops.

We designed the FlatTop to be enjoyable to use and carry, not something that requires a stopwatch to appreciate.

Compact, Pocket-Friendly EDC Design

The FlatTop's low-profile, stemless shape makes it easy to carry in your pocket or keep on your desk.

Its solid brass construction provides a satisfying feel, while its simple, classic appearance complements other precision-machined EDC accessories. Whether you're taking a break at work, enjoying a moment at your desk, or adding to a collection of mechanical spinning tops, the FlatTop offers a unique hands-on experience.
